MBJ: Memphis MMA takes national stage next week
“The Memphis mixed martial arts community is going to take the national stage Jan. 23 when the World Series of Fighting comes to the lobby of FedExForum.
World Series of Fighting will host a seven-fight card through a partnership with Memphis-based V3 Fights. The card will include popular V3 fighters Jaleel Willis, Bryce Mitchell and Wade Johnson. The main event will include Memphis native Teddy Holder, who fights for World Series of Fighting.
Carlos Silva, CEO of World Series of Fighting, said the organization hasn’t been in the Southeast region but saw an opportunity by partnering with V3. The four-year-old promotion’s events are broadcast on NBC and the NBC Sports Network.
“If you look at the landscape, there are three big promotions. Everyone knows the biggest and baddest with UFC, then you have Bellator on Spike and us with our partnership with NBC,” Silva said. “[Fans in Memphis] will see a nation and worldwide fight promotion and they’ll see themselves on the NBC Sports Network.”
As far as future Memphis events from V3 and World Series of Fighting, Harmeier and Silva are optimistic, but they want to see how the first event works out.
However, Silva said the continued acceptance of MMA can only help the sport grow. Since Tennessee legalized the sport in 2009, its popularity has continued to expand.
