MBJ: Airport’s average airfare continues to fall
“Since 2014, the average cost to fly out of Memphis International Airport has dropped more than 13 percent.
According to the latest data, released by the Department of Transportation Tuesday, Feb. 9, MEM’s average airfare cost $396.17 in the third quarter of 2015 — a 5.4 percent drop from the previous quarter and down 13.2 percent from the same period the year before.
The new numbers put Memphis International at No. 37 in cost among the nation’s 100 largest airports — down seven spots from Q2.
“This is good news for Memphis flyers and good news for the continued resurgence of our airport,” said Pace Cooper, chair of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority Board of Commissioners. “Lower fares have been a stated goal of our efforts to improve air service; this new ranking reaffirms our continued progress at becoming a more affordable, and thus more competitive, destination market.”
MEM’s average airfare has dropped by more than $140 since it peaked in 2012 with average fares of nearly $540.
“I am confident this positions us for further gains in the near future,” Cooper added.
As reported last quarter, MEM is still outpacing Little Rock, which has average fares of $444.22, ….”
