Localmemphis: MPD Officers Ride Bikes With North Memphis Kids

A few Memphis Police officers are trying to build bridges with local kids. Officers with the Community Outreach program ride bikes with kids every Tuesday and Thursday.
The officers take a group of about 20 kids who live in North Memphis to parks like Overton park and Shelby farms where they ride bikes.
The bikes are donated by Walmart. The kids learn how to ride safely, but also talk to officers about cyber bullying, peer pressure, and gangs.
“Because of all the things that’s going on, that’s what we wanted to do. We wanted to change the face of what a police officer truly is. We go in, we actually do care. We are not robots,” said officer Victoria Byrum.
The kids who are part of the program get to keep the bike after four weeks. The officers say many of these kids have never had a bike of their own.
