MBJ: New bakery exudes Hollywood Feed’s ‘passion for pets’
Hollywood Feed has officially opened its specialty bakery on Union Avenue, located adjacent to its store.
And the response, according to Hollywood Feed president Shawn McGhee, exceeded expectations.
“Everyone who has seen it has been wowed,” McGhee said. “When you build a dog bakery, you get comments that it’s nicer than the human bakeries in town. It’s definitely one of our better efforts.”
McGhee opted to have the company make its own treat line after not finding a fresh, nutritious pet treat. McGhee hired Sarah Nicholson, a pastry chef, to act as director of bakery services, and to develop treats with no wheat, flour or white sugar. Instead, the treats include ingredients such as almond and coconut flour, eggs, fruits and vegetables.
Initially, the bakery will supply Hollywood Feed’s local stores, but McGhee said “when we get a comfort level,” the treats will be introduced to other markets. The company has 45 stores across Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Texas.
While the response to the bakery was a pleasant surprise, McGhee had no doubt it would be successful, following in the steps of the company’s line of dog beds that it launched a couple of years ago.
