MBJ: Mississippi furniture manufacturer plans $20 million expansion

A Mississippi furniture manufacturer is investing $20 million in an expansion in the northeast part of the state.

When the expansion is completed, Southern Motion will create 600 new jobs in the city of Baldwyn.

The company plans to expand into a former Hancock Fabrics location in the Harry A. Martin North Lee Industrial Park, where it will occupy 64.5 acres and have a 758,000-square-foot facility.

Southern Motion last expanded in Baldwyn in 2015, when it invested $600,000 to accommodate an increase in production. That expansion created 60 jobs, bringing its employee total in the area to 250 people. The company also employs another 1,200 people in Pontotoc, where it’s based. The company expects to begin operations at the new location in Baldwyn by next January.
