MBJ: GiVE 365 grant applications open

GiVE 365, a philanthropy initiative of the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis, is now accepting grant applications on the theme of “Foundations for the Future.”

“GiVE 365 is a unique way for nonprofits to get introduced to a group of charitably inclined Mid-Southerners who are looking for new, unique ways to invest in our community,” said Sutton Mora Hayes, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis. “It gives organizations a way to demonstrate, to a captive audience, their impact and their potential. Over 70 percent of our members either give or volunteer for organizations that they met through GiVE 365.”

The grants will be distributed to programs that help youth meet their potential in areas such as education, vocation, recreation, mentoring, behavioral health and support groups, entrepreneurship, the arts and technology. Applications are due online by February 6.

In 2016, seven organizations received awards totaling $52,285. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis, Exchange Club Family Center, Hope House, HopeWorks, Indie Memphis, Let’s Innovate Through Education (LITE) and Memphis Crisis Center were the grantees.

GiVE 365 has distributed more than $378,000 since its inception six years ago. Members give $365 a year, pool their money and vote on both the annual theme and grant recipients. More than 250 individuals, couples, families and businesses are currently members.

For the first time, GiVE 365 grant applicants will be required to submit a WHEREtoGIVEmidsouth.org profile to be eligible for the grant. These are due by January 20. The website is the foundation’s directory of local nonprofits.

“We think it gives nonprofits a new way to tell their story that gives potential donors concise, important information that can help those donors — and, of course, GiVE 365 members — decide where they want to invest their money,” Hayes said.

Grant applicants are highly encouraged to attend an information session that will cover the grant theme, application process and requirements and expectations. Applicants can register for one of the upcoming sessions on the GiVE 365 website.

GiVE 365 members will hear pitches from the finalists on April 11 and the grant awardees will be announced on May 9.
