ArtsMemphis announces 5 inaugural ArtsAccelerator grants; Food Bank move

The recipients, per the bizjournal website, are:  Ben Butler, Mary Jo Karimnia, Susan Maakestad, Brandon Marshall and Terri Phillips.  They each receive $3000 toward their artistic projects which they described in their applications.  The competition for the grants consisted of 69 applicants.  The projects have a deadline of completion by August, 2014.  Congratulations! Also, it was announced that the Mid South Food Bank has purchased property to build its new facilities and headquarters, perhaps allowing it to hire more folks.  The nonprofit purchased the former Arrow Electronics building in Oakhaven. Health research receives funding and Memphis biotech company wins $1 million

Some recent news about Memphis area researchers and companies getting funding: 1.  A St. Jude researcher, Tanja Gruber, has received a $600,000 Translational grant from The V Foundation for research of infantile acute lymphoblastic leukemia. 2.  More than $2.5 million in asthma research grant money has been transferred to The University of Tennessee Health Science Center following associate professor Dr. Stephania Cormier’s arrival. 3.  A Memphis-based company, US Biologic, that has developed vaccination pellets to try to prevent the spread of Lyme disease has won the $1 million Global Food and Health Innovation Challenge prize.  CEO is Mason Kauffman, and the vaccination … Continue reading Health research receives funding and Memphis biotech company wins $1 million
