MDN: St. Jude Expansion Looks East of Campus

MDN: St. Jude Expansion Looks East of Campus The city’s plan for the Pinch District between the Pyramid and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital isn’t the only reason the city will seek expanded uses of the Tourism Development Zone and an expansion of a Tax Increment Financing district. Mayor Jim Strickland’s administration is preparing to go to the state to seek an expansion of both, city Housing and Community Development director Paul Young told Memphis City Council members Tuesday, Jan. 17. Young didn’t set a date for starting the process. But he and ALSAC officials offered more details about residential … Continue reading MDN: St. Jude Expansion Looks East of Campus

CA: TDZ plan could transform Memphis riverfront, Mud Island

CA: TDZ plan could transform Memphis riverfront, Mud Island Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland could seek City Council and state approval in early 2017 to reinvest potentially millions of sales tax dollars captured by the Downtown Tourism Development Zone into the riverfront and Mud Island River Park. Strickland’s administration will propose an amendment to the Downtown TDZ that would define the riverfront and Mud Island as “qualified public use facilities,” freeing the city to use TDZ funds for everything from construction projects to street lights and sidewalks within a mile of the facilities, Chief Operations Officer Doug McGowen confirmed this week. The administration is … Continue reading CA: TDZ plan could transform Memphis riverfront, Mud Island

MDN: Mud Island Proposals to Reset If Tourism Funding Approved

MDN: Mud Island Proposals to Reset If Tourism Funding Approved Even if the city of Memphis gets state approval to use Downtown tourism development zone (TDZ) funds for Mud Island, Andy Cates says his outdoors company will not be part of any redevelopment plans for the river park. And if the city gains TDZ funding, it would open redevelopment of Mud Island to more proposals. Last month, Memphis developer Cates dropped RVC Outdoor Destinations’ bid to redevelop Mud Island, leaving only Branson, Missouri-based Mansion Entertainment and Media LLC’s proposal to redevelop just the amphitheater on the table. As the city … Continue reading MDN: Mud Island Proposals to Reset If Tourism Funding Approved

MDN: Uptown Vision

MDN: Uptown Vision Brand new sidewalks, streetlights and paved roads set the stage for Habitat for Humanity’s Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in North Memphis, where nearly 1,500 volunteers have descended this week to build a subdivision from scratch. Several years ago, the swath of land was overgrown and crime-ridden as the site of the razed Cedar Court apartment complex. It was one of the last frontiers for the northern development boundaries of Uptown, a neighborhood established by Henry Turley Co. for Memphians of low-to-moderate income. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis started focusing on the greater Uptown neighborhood … Continue reading MDN: Uptown Vision

CA: Bass Pro’s heir apparent saw potential in Pyramid, Memphis “Dad, you have to see this.” John Paul Morris remembered saying those words. Morris had grown up in Missouri, not Memphis, though he liked the city.
