“Four graduates of Start Co.’s accelerators have received $997,000 in capital investment: The College Initiative, Core Fire Commandos, Pickle and Well Done. With the latest round of funding, the 2014 cohort companies from Start Co. have raised a little more than $2 million since completing their accelerator programs. The College Initiative, an organization that provides college-ready low-income and underserved high school students with the tools, support and mentoring to apply and succeed in college, received $767,000. “The University of Mississippi has supplied marijuana to the federal government for several decades, and the university has received a new grant to continue to be the United States’ connection. The National Institute on Drug Abuse grows marijuana in a secure field just down the street from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, all approved and monitored by the DEA. “A community organization that employs a staff of 42 and generates millions in fundraising each year has been given a $1.3 million, 37,000-square-foot donation of its own. GP Cellulose, a subsidiary of Georgia-Pacific, has donated its office building near the Binghampton neighborhood to United Way of the Mid-South. The facility at 1005 Tillman St. is valued at $1.3 million, and served as the headquarters for Buckeye Technologies Inc. — until the company merged with Georgia-Pacific in 2013.
